Demand management
Following changes to our existing peer review practices and submission policies, we have conducted an extensive consultation with the social science community, collecting views on what further steps might be taken to manage demand for research funding. We have received a very positive response, including detailed comments from 44 institutions, and the results are outlined on our website.
Funding opportunities
Research Outcomes rolloutAccess to the new cross-council output collection system Research Outcomes will be provided to all Higher Education Institutions at the end of October, and to all grant holders from mid-November. More Years, Better Lives: EU demographic research initiativeThe EU Joint Programming Initiative "More Years, Better Lives - The Potential and Challenges of Demographic Change" has been launched to encourage collaboration between European and national research programmes. The ESRC leads on UK contributions from across Research Councils UK. £1M for evaluating Welsh educationThe WISERD team in Wales has won funding of £1 million from the Welsh Government to evaluate the Foundation Phase early years education policy - a ‘learning through doing’ approach to learning for all children aged three to seven years in Wales. PeopleProfessor Dame Janet Finch has been appointed by the ESRC and the Medical Research Council as Chair of the Birth Cohort Study Governing Board. Professor Finch is currently Professor of Sociology at Manchester University and was formerly Vice Chancellor at Keele University. ESRC Council member Professor Malcolm Grant, provost of University College London, has been appointed as head of the NHS Commissioning Board, which will oversee changes within the health service. |
